Very informative and inspiring to support local growers. I visit Makinajian farm at least once a week to grab a pie and pick up veggies. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Another place to check out if in the Vernon, NJ area is a small cheese-making farmer, Jonathon White, the home of Bobolink Dairy. His cows are grass-fed and cheese made from raw milk (very rare nowadays). He holds tours of the farm, bake bread from their outdoor oven, and may have a chance to taste the morning raw milk right out of the udder! YUM!
As long as the public is interested in organic food, I don't think his prediction will come to fruition (sorry :) ).

As far as the lack of local produce in stores? It's a distribution issue and it's challenging. That's what CSAs are for. He could start a CSA fruit share in his neck of the woods and offer it to surrounding CSAs for starters. CSAs are to help farmers sell but not have to be dealing with being salespeople (or at least minimize the task).

Farming is a hard job. I'm glad this fellow is doing the work. I hope he gets as close to organic as possible for his sake, his workers, his family, his neighbors and his customers. Pesticides are just not good for people or the environment.

I also wanted to share this letter from The NY Seafood Association to Nick Anastasi of the Suffolk County Fisheries Task Force, which I was CC'd on:

To Nick Anastasi - Suffolk County Fisheries Task Force

Hi Nick,

I recently saw the Newsday article concerning the possible replacement of the failing outfall pipe from the Southwest Sewer District. I understand the approximate cost of the replacement is 150 million dollars. There is another possibility to consider that may allow major improvements to our bay rather than just a return to the status quo.

The sewer district discharge has dramatically affected the water quality of the Great South Bay. Because the outfall by-passes the bay and discharges directly into the ocean, over 20 million gallons of fresh water a day has been removed from the groundwater flow into the bay. That groundwater had previously provided important nutrients to our bay upon which our bay's resources depended. I strongly believe that this removal of groundwater and the inorganic nitrogen it contained is the direct cause of lost shellfish populations and the Brown Tide. Simply repairing the outfall pipe will only prolong these problems.

The current NYS SPEDES permit requires that the system's treated effluent be discharged into the ocean. However, if treated to a different level, the effluent could be directly discharged into the bay and provide an important source of necessary nutrients. By up-grading the sewer system to tertiary treatment, we would be able to seasonally nitrify or denitrify the effluent and provide our bay with the necessary nutrients to prevent Brown Tides and promote shellfish repopulation.

Engineers and scientists in Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island are now considering a similar approach for a sewer system upgrade there. They have found that the nutrients from the current sewer system provide over 50% of the nitrogen used by this bay's thriving hard clam population. Since these populations could collapse if all the nitrogen from the sewer plants were removed, there are considering a seasonal dinitrification method that would provide them the opportunity to manage nitrogen additions rather than simply reducing them. The concept would be to reduce nitrogen inputs during the summer months (when nitrogen may be excessive) but provide them during the spawning and growth cycles in the spring and fall (when then may be limiting).

Because Suffolk County has already allocated the monies for the outfall repair, we now have the unique opportunity to consider another method that could yield substantial gains to our bay's water quality and shellfish populations. In addition, an upgrade of the Southwest sewer system to seasonal denitrification may even be less expensive. Now is the time that we should look to the future and consider this alternative.

Sincerely,

Roger C. Tollefsen

[I posted this on the Canvas blog also]

Interesting how Newsday had coverage of the shellfish decline a few weeks after Canvas reported on it. Note that they make reference to the lack of nutrients in the water as a possible cause. My source from the story (Roger Tollefsen of the New York Seafood Association) also notes:

“In the intro on the left page, Smith makes the comment under “Brown Tide’s Role” that it is difficult to link the clam decline to the Brown Tide since the decline proceed the bloom by a decade. On the contrary, there is a direct link. The major reduction to the concentration of Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN) in the GSB began when the Southwest Sewer System came on line in 1985. This system caused an immediate reduction to the amount of algae available for the shellfish and began the decline of shellfish populations. The remaining populations temporarily were able to control the remaining algae (including any Brown Tide) until the collapse reached a critical limit. The limit was reached in 1995 with the advent of the Brown Tide.”

I thought that was a fascinating–-and salient–-point. Thanks, Roger

Responding to Ms. Kennedy...It's a matter of talking to farmers. I know at Green Thumb Farm in Water Mill, they were stocking non-organic tomatoes because some folks out there want them. I overheard a lady in a fur coat with bling on her fingers who was driving a VERY nice Mercedes saying how she didn't want to pay more for organic local tomatoes. How about them apples?...I mean tomatoes :) !

However, the farm wasn't passing them off as theirs or organic, so that's fine with me. After all, they're trying to make a living and please customers.

I hear you loud and clear about wanting to eat local. How about calling the farm first and asking what they have and if it's grown there or elsewhere on Long Island? It'll save you the gas. However, keep in mind that if something is from elsewhere in NY, NJ, PA, CT, RI and maybe even MA, it could be considered local. It's not from another country and it's a lot closer than the average 1500 to 2500 miles per mouthful that much of our food is travelling. You'd then want to know where it's from and how long it took to get from point A to point B in terms of freshness. It's about 355 miles from NYC to Pittsburgh, PA. I don't have a map in front of me but that gives you quite a swath to get produce that could be very fresh indeed. If you go to the Union Square farmers market in NYC, there are farmers from the states I mentioned and I have NO problem supporting them. Check it out sometime!

I was ask in a hunderd words or less how too change things? My answer was. To stop drugs you give every one that has a problem a prescription for the drug of their chose with the clear understanding they don’t share their drugs with no one. This will stop drugs for the next generation and stop all drug crimes. In the future most all crime will be stop with cameras and that means no more dead ladies will be found in the trunks of their cars with out us knowing who put them there. Any one willing to work will be giving a brotherhood card that will pay all your bills. Im good at this. Then I was ask how that would stop people in suits with good jobs from robbing people? And my answer was. My approach to any problem is I will ask my self how I would want to be treated if I was in the position of people that needs help. This need for help is the main drive behind crime. So you will need to take away the cause of crime which in my mind is that people for the most part have no helper when they are in need. fix this and you will stop more crimes than all the cameras in the world. My true answer to crime is unity. There is three ways to do this, my way or the way it is now or if you have a better way I will support you. At no point in time think we will be perfect just know we can be much better. Many men have many talents this just happen to be mine. And that is I will give you words of power that will work even if I am dead. Time will prove me. Your question was crime? My answer is if you are willing to work you will be given a brotherhood card that has no spending limit. That is what I would have men do unto me. And then if there is people in pretty suits robbing one another it wont bother me. The problem is no one will serve these people because we will be serving one another. Because you have show interest I will send you more words and give you more power. Your brother. If I am going to dream, I am going to dream big. So I will send the words, why not?

Like so many Long Islanders, I am a transplant from NYC who commutes to Patchogue from his job in Manhattan rather than to live in the outer boroughs of NYC where there are smothering high rise buildings, congestion of people and cars, noise pollution and air pollution. The proposed construction of a 102 ft. tall hotel at Main Street & N. Ocean Avenue in Patchogue Village would create nothing short of an assault on the senses. The various towns and villages that dot the South Shore along Montauk Highway have their appeal in that they invoke a sense of quaintness and tranquility. Buildings taller than 35 feet are definitely out of scale with the character of this region. Tall buildings are obtrusive as well as cold and impersonal. They veil the sky and distant landscape. They block daylight and sunlight. They lack aesthetic appeal except, perhaps, when viewed from afar. (According to the publicized artist's rendering, the street scene resembles that in a picture of Manhattan, and the subject proposed hotel complex looks imposing and reminds me of a hospital.) Tall buildings dwarf the pedestrian both physically and spiritually. The visage of streets bounded by walls of buildings is no more appealing than that from inside an imagined giant maze. I imagine that many Long Islanders share the sensitivities about which I speak, but many people don't appreciate what they have until it is taken away. Perhaps I should state my objection more plainly. The plan for construction of a 102 ft. tall hotel must be scrapped! It is precisely this kind of so called "development" prevalent in NYC's outer boroughs from which first generation Long Islanders had run away! The plan must be downscaled to accommodate a maximum height of 35 feet. Simply put, there is absolutely nothing appealing about facing a wall. And the perception of a wall would, essentially, equate to the psychological effect on pedestrians who are within close proximity to such a tall structure. The structure would disgrace Main Street. It would destroy the area's small town ambiance. The building would create an oppressive walled-in effect and reduce skylight on the street. It would also give undeserved momentum to future high-rise development in the area. Ultimately, the end result are all of the undesirable aspects of a city experience -- the overcrowding of people, traffic congestion, street crime, metered street parking due to the unavailability of open parking spaces, dirty streets, noisy streets, gloomy shadowed streets, soot and other air pollution. I know well what I speak of because I have lived in NYC. Tourists who visit Long Island do so for reasons other than to experience a "city" ambiance. Clearly, Patchogue Village cannot compete with large cities such as Manhattan with regard to their cultural amenities and should not attempt to do so. However, Patchogue Village and the surrounding region have their own unique appeal, and Patchogue Village should build upon these strengths. There is a rustic charm to the stretch of landscape through which Montauk Highway winds, and it is the quaintness of the small towns and villages along its path that is their unique appeal. Not too very long ago, Queens County was largely farmland interspersed with small towns and villages. The so called "development" of this borough of NYC in the name of "progress" and "growth" has resulted in what we now see as, for the most part, wall to wall apartment buildings and commercial buildings six stories and taller, population overcrowding, vehicle congestion, noise pollution as well as air particulate pollution. Long Island's present population was largely due to the transplantation of people from NYC's boroughs such as Queens, which had begun in earnest some 40 years ago. These "transplants" chose to sacrifice their borough's close proximity to Manhattan's cultural amenities and, for many, their easy commute to work for Long Island's open space, fresh air and serenity. However, these very qualities for which Long Island is noted are rapidly being eroded away due to overdevelopment. The appeal of Eastern Long Island are all of the things that cities cannot offer and is the reason city folk visit. Isn't prudent for Patchogue Village to build upon these assets for the benefit of its residents and visitors? Nearby Sayville and Bellport are model towns which Patchogue Village should emulate, not the disgraced (dare I say ugly) Queens, Hempstead Village, Rockville Center or Mineola! There would be no incentive for residents from those western areas to visit Patchogue Village if it is perceived as just more of the same thing. Furthermore, the belief that the proposed hotel will attract visitors to the area (and bolster the area's economy) is unrealistic and naive. The appeal of Eastern Suffolk County, albeit a positive one, still does not warrant the expense and fuss associated with a hotel or motel overnight stay (with the exception of far Eastern Suffolk). The overwhelming majority of tourists are one-day travelers from western regions who visit on pleasant spring/summer/fall days. Those who visit Long Island for business purposes would likely select hotels within close proximity to major thoroughfares such as the Long Island Expressway, not in extreme South Shore and North Shore locations. Even if the appeal of Patchogue Village might someday justify an overnight stay (unlikely as it would seem), the Village's appeal would not be due to the presence of the proposed hotel. As for the present Patchogue Village, to construct a hotel and hope for visitors to fill its rooms is preposterous. Is it job promotions, political quid pro quo, personal wealth or ego that is driving this proposal? Those well salaried Tritec architects plan their destruction of Patchogue Village, collect their profits and then run away -- to their homes which are undoubtedly located in secluded areas where people are few, the air is fresh and the sky is open. While Patchogue officials should be commended for noticeable improvements in the area, construction of the subject proposed hotel would not be one of them. Similarly, while the newly erected lampposts and new curbs along N. Ocean Avenue do add polish to the area, there are too many of the lampposts. The beautiful, grand, aged trees that lined the curbs on each side of N. Ocean Avenue were uprooted. The street now reminds me of an airport landing strip! (Fewer lampposts and the presence of trees would have been much more pleasing to the eye.) Along Main Street what is simply needed is a restoration of all the facades of the buildings. The store fronts should have large windows. An occasional bench should be installed and more trees should be planted. I applaud the installation of flower beds and overhangs. More of such would provide the finishing touches to grace Main Street. Artists' lofts are a great idea so long as they are low-rise. Future housing, including affordable housing, should also be low-rise. Such would make this village a positive memorable experience, not a grotesque 102 ft. tall building! And this would be accomplished with minimal cost and disruption. Construction of a 102 ft. hotel is going in the wrong direction to achieve a revitalization of this area. Those in favor of such a building seem to envision a "concrete city" congested with people and automobiles, which nobody wants and from which Long Islander's had run away. They should think New Hope, Pennsylvania instead of New York, New York! I have a proposal; let's construct a 102 ft. tall building near the homes of Tritec officials and near the homes of all those who are pushing for this monstrosity. After all, "what's good for the goose...."

Sincerely,

As to her sexuality, consider several points. Although I'm uncertain if the one I found is the correct Herbert West, her first husband may have been a man 8 years her junior. Her second husband was 16 years younger than she, and, in a letter, she complained that he had no interest in ordinary sex. In referring to her "first lover" (at the time of the Spanish-American War), she used the pronoun "him." Finally, she wrote, "By that time I was in Bellevue hospital and out - after a strange, certainly illegal operation which made it impossible that I could ever again have any sex life, unless it were lesbian, which has always seemed to me to be completely impossible." I feel this evidence confutes the idea that she was a Lesbian.

Thank you and your other commentators for this jog to thoughts of an "old family friend-artist", though I never met Helen West Heller. She was a kind of mystical name when I was growing up.

Her work was prominent my childhood home. My mother was a good friend of Helen West Heller during the 1930s.

One Helen Vasprink(?) Garlinghouse (I think under her maiden name) had a gallery in the Village and handled Helen's work and said proudly that when she could afford it, she always bought from Helen and not from Maurice de Vlamink whom she also handled even though she knew his work would appreciate more (as it did). Unfortunately, I was estranged from my mother from 1960 to the 1990s when my interest in Heller grew, though after her death I did find some letters from Heller. Helen Garlinghouse and her husband had been close friends of my mother and actually was introduced to Heller by her, but she was given an ultimatum break off all contact with my father. I think Heller may have been given the same ultimatum. I recall growing up several Heller paintings in our house, notably Spans of Time and Sugaring Off which I eventually obtained.

My father remained close to Helen Garlinghouse and may have stayed in touch with Heller into the 1950s. Again, unfortunately I didn't see him growing up and only discovered his connections as an adult. He still had one woodblock when I did locate him and said that he had sent me the others he owned (which arrived, but I never saw). He and his second wife were close with the Garlinghouses who owned a large wonderfully and richly colored oil of Don Quixote on horseback as well as several smaller cityscape paintings and one mounted mural and an unmounted section of one that, my memory fails me here, was either from a Subway mural commission or similar to one.

After my father died, I looked her up. She was elderly then and did not recall where the subway mural was. She had a number of colored woodblocks and a number of her wood engravings. She sold me several. I also have professional photos of several of her paintings which if anyone is interested I think I can dig up. I made a small effort to track them down.

Character is often the hardest thing to recover after a person's death. But here are a few hints of the person, at least in the time she was in New York City. The owner of the Green Bookstore on 3rd? Avenue recalled her fondly as a "short, almost tiny energetic" woman who lived nearby and dropped in often. The owner, my father and Helen & Nelson Garlinghouse separately all talked about Helen's political and outspoken bent, using the word communist in the context of the 1950s. For sure, I gather she was what we would today call an activist socially conscious, liberal, progressive. Sexuality may have been part of some of the mythology of Heller's life. My mother was in a long term lesbian relationship, following her divorce and apparently in several earlier on. Helen Garlinghouse, according to my father, also had lesbian affairs. Some of my mother's absolute silence about any details of the artist whose work hung on our walls which extended to all details of my father and no mention of the Garlinghouses, whoI believe they actually roomed at my mother's home for a time during the 1930s where she and Nelson played piano duets.

Finally, it is remarkable how little I could find out about Heller until Scattergood Morse came along. So, if he made errors,, some of which may have been from my contributions, it should be noted that he certainly put her back on the artistic radar where she clearly belongs.

Commuting 40 miles each way for work, I have been researching hybrids and have been waiting over three years for the arrival of the Smart Car. When I opened to this story in a waiting room it caught my eye. Then it got my goat! How many blatant errors and ambiguous information can be in a single article? First, the Mini Cooper, Cooper-S, and other Mini USA models are not called "Cooper Minis." Moreover, having had one I can tell you it may be small, but requires premium gasoline and with an automatic transmission gets only 23 to 24 mpg, not very green. My Honda Civic automatic (non-hybrid) gets 28-30). In addition, while it is true the Smart Car websites are currently running a promotion involving Swatch watches, the cars on the sites are all shown as Smart For Two, not "Swatch For Two." The article states that it qualifies as green because in gets over 40 mpg. My friend's Civic (standard tranny) gets 40-45, but because it's not a hybrid, does not qualify for a "clean pass" to drive in the HOV lane. I once rented (with thoughts of buying) a Honda Fit. It got worse milage than the Mini, was terribly uncomfortable, and somewhat underpowered. I would greatly appreciate an informative article comparing apples to apples, explaining the pros and cons of the various types of cars that are truly not gas guzzlers. Thank you for allowing me to vent.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for your article on Atilla Hejja. I've been disheartened that there doesn't seem to be much coverage about his death or, more importantly, his life. I only knew Atilla for one year when I was a student of his. Unfortunately, I had to cut my session short due to a car accident. I had planned on going to the Fall session to continue. I have my first professional oil paint study sitting in my studio, one week shy of completion with Atilla's guidance. I just can't bring myself to get it out, or to go back to The Stevenson Academy yet.

I cannot explain why I have been so moved by him; my husband looks at me strangely when I tear up talking about him. From a student's perspective, I just KNEW I was learning from the best; a true Master. He may have seemed harsh in his critique to some, but if you take your art seriously, you knew that he was doing his best to show you how you can do better.

I am a professional muralist/decorative artisan/faux finisher, and mid-way during my course, I was commissioned to paint four murals at Verdi's Catering Hall in Westbury. The knowledge I gained about perspective and shading from Atilla truly helped me in designing and executing the murals. I felt so confident in the knowledge he imparted on me, and knew he was just a phone call away if I needed some advice. He really was thrilled by his students' accomplishments. As an art instructor, I know the feeling.

I am learning more about him after his death, and the fact that he gave up his ideal of a very comfortable retirement to pursue his bigger dream of creating a professional fine arts studio to help students, especially high schoolers, achieve their personal or professional best in the art field, is truly an amazing testimony to his character and dedication.

I keep the postcard I received at his memorial with his painting of Cape Winds at my work station, to serve as an inspiration, and to remind me of the wonderful legacy he left behind in his short, but very worthwhile, life.

Thank you again, for recognizing Atilla Hejja; it bothered me so much that a life could end so suddenly, and the world can continue as if nothing happened.
Writing freely the page becomes another "ear" to hear one and allow them to hear themselves. And, often with enough complaining, blaming, etc. there is a switch into Higher Knowing as one continues to journal on a regular basis. It is a perfect companion, and for me, personally, a life-saver since it enabled me to see what I wouldn't/couldn't see any other way.
