Dear Readers,

Welcome to the April issue of canvas, and happy spring to you all. April is one of my favorite months. Every day brings palpable signs of the season: feeling the air turn warmer, watching the trees bud and begin to leaf out, experiencing daylight stretching later and later into the evening. I always feel a renewed sense of energy during this month that bridges the transition from winter to spring.

April is also when Earth Day is celebrated, offering a welcome reminder on the 22nd to consider our footprint on the planet. It’s a great time to assess what we’ve been doing and what more can be done to help guide ourselves, our family, friends, neighbors, and our world at large towards a more responsible lifestyle.

I remember my first experience with Earth Day, joining more than a million people in Central Park’s Sheep Meadow in 1990 for the concert of a lifetime. At the time, I was on the editorial staff of a glossy national magazine that focused on many of the very same environmental issues we cover in canvas. I recall how proud I felt that day to be part of the movement, helping spread awareness of the importance of working towards a more sustainable way of life through the pages of that magazine. Sadly, it was a short-lived publication, which I attribute to its being a bit ahead of its time. Which is why I feel doubly blessed to be part of the canvas mission, since the green movement’s time has finally come—and is hopefully here to stay.

Earth Day has seen its own ebbs and flows since that amazing event in 1990, and it’s wonderful to see the momentum accelerating in ways we’ve never experienced before. While it’s taken nearly 20 years for the nation and major industries to finally catch on, it’s encouraging to see widespread strides being made towards being more ecologically responsible. For example, in “Sustainable Island” read about sustainability efforts across Long Island, and discover how the automotive industry is finally making electric-car technology available to the consumer market in “Green Machines.”

It’s been a long time coming, but it looks like we are finally at the dawn of a new age. I invite each and every one of you to join us on April 22nd and every single day to think about all the little ways we can participate towards this greater good. What’s so gratifying is that every little effort counts towards paying it forward for a better future for one and all.

Happy Earth Day, everyone! Let’s continue to make every day Earth Day!!
